Every year the seattle opera Bravo! club has a big fundraiser auction. one of the Bravo! club former members offered up dinner for 6 (4 + his 2). Our friend J bid on and won the dinner. so we get this email with an address, date, time, and 'I'll see you there'. if anyone reading this is FB friends with me you might have noticed my status "dinner for 4 at a stranger's house because it was won at an auction. blog to follow...provided we aren't axe-murdered". LOL i mean seriously, that's what 2nd rate horror films are made of, right?
we find the house, park the car, and as we walk up the few steps realize there's no way to get into the front gate! matt starts to go around the back - see if it's an alley entrance when the guy opens the gate. it's one of those 'we open it when we're expecting people otherwise it's locked and tall and private'. can't blame them. it was a nice little sanctuary they had.
we actually got there before our friend, and our hosts, john and april, 2 avid opera friends, were busy trying to finish all the cooking.
we brought along the wines - champagne, reisling, tempranillo and dessert sherry.
shiatake, crimini and duxelles mushrooms, chives from the garden, and goat cheese on baguette
seafood galore! 2 dungenuess crabs up top, shrimp throughout, and at least a dozen of each: muscles, olympia (the little ones), hama, and pickering oysters.
i was so proud of myself, i actually peeled my shrimp, and pulled off the legs. i've always had problems with this in the past. and it wasn't easy now, but i did it. getting into the crab was no problem, however. not with a nutcracker!
we polished it off, man! i tell you that was a lot of seafood but when we found out duck was the main course we all agreed we could still eat more.
it was quite tasty! cherry and rhubarb puree to go with.
the cheese course, baguettes not pictured. starting at the top is a goat chevre, *very* good, to the right a humboldt fog, and a gorgonzola to round things out.
coffee, home-made chocolate and ginger ice cream, and merengue 'sea urchins' - get it? we started with sea food, and ended with sea food!
we met a couple of very nice, fun, people, had a great dinner, and hopefully will see them around the opera house!
