11/24/09 Drinking Lessons/ The Hunt Club

(yes yes, i know, i'm out of order. sorry. deal with it.)

yes, i also realize i'm way behind on posting everything. that's in part thanks to my cool photo widget people folding. i'm looking into making my own blog template on my own website. yes that means you'll have to log in and re-follow me once it's established, but the good news for me is it'll be copy/paste all the text, and i can do a lot more with the images. if it all works out. and right now it's a medium-large if. but i'm being hopeful.

now, on to drinking lessons!

i had posted a couple Fb status regarding this night, and i thought i'd share them with you.

Libby Landy is off to drinking lessons.
- JW: Outstanding. Don't forget to do your homework.
- KF: Libby - who are you taking from? If you need grad-level work, let me (and my liver) know.

Libby Landy went to drinking lessons tues night. lesson 1. never, and i mean *never* plan on drinking 8 (8?) cocktails on nothing but 1 grapefruit (eaten for lunch)!
- JW: ..lesson 1a, don't go on facebook afterwards :-)
- CM: I am now having flashbacks to college
- TC: ditto on the college flashbacks, one night I couldn't get rid of the unexpectedly potent drinks and I ran all night long because I knew I'd die if I stopped. I'm hoping it'll be a good sign that you were able to text?...
- SN: I didn't know you could take lessons for drinking! Once you got beyond your freshman year of college, that is!
- TH: ouch!
- TH: Is this like my 'tequila rule' that I had to learn every ten yrs or so...?
- LG: I learned that lesson about 25 years ago when I was watching "Casablanca" and sipping some very gin on the rocks. It was so good. Now I've forgotten the name of the gin because I don't touch it any more! You might know the name.

well, after i post this let me know if you are interested in the 'next time' we can go - they do 2 sessions and can serve i think 12 at a time. in talking with a couple after the event we thought it could be fun to fill the place for the night. 12 at the bar and then i guess 12 or so could sit in the bar and eat. then swap out! what do y'all think? sound like fun? ok then!

so yes, as you noticed from the 1 FB post above, i had eaten 1 grapefruit for lunch, and this was on a tuesday so matt and i had a workout. so ok, not a big deal. matt said we were to be there by 5:30 so we're probably eating before, at the sorrento in the bar, probably. no problem!

well, it wasn't quite like that. we got there actually just about right at 5:30. everyone else was already there and we were stuck in the last 2 spots at the end of the bar. usually i don't have a problem with this, but as i was actually 'around the corner' of the bar, i was actually in the spot where the wait staff pick up drinks etc. and well, i had to sit sideways because there was no actual space below the bartop for knees! talk about suck! so i wasn't having a very good night. it was very uncomfortable, and i told matt after that i wouldn't be able to sit in that spot again. not to be the bitch, but if that was the only spot open, i'd sit at a table and they'd have to deal with it! he told me that he agreed it wasn't ideal and of course having never attended 'class' before we didn't know, so next time we'd plan accordingly and get there early enough it would hopefully not be an issue.

we haven't been seated for very long and have a glass put in front of us. now i don't remember what most of the drinks were, even through the course of the night! we had 2 bartenders, and we got a little history, comedy, agility and 9 drinks  from them.

[good thing we were at night school, i think someone needs to teach them the words 'night' and 'school' are not words usually split!]

our 1st drink, a pre-cocktail drink.

[left: our little group; right: 50's spritzer bottles]

ok, well if they had posted the drink info i needed for my post online it's no longer there. i wrote a comment and hopefully someone will respond with all the drink info. otherwise this is going to be 1 long list of pictures of drinks that all look the same. oh well. i think i've found some of the 'missing' information. their site for this is rather confusing, so hopefully i'll get everything in the correct place. at the very least i'll have the right information with the wrong picture. IMHO they need to make sure all 5+ (five?) posts from this one 2 hour event are all posted on the same day, and hey, what's wrong with putting them into 1 post? or at least put #2 of 5 at the top?

our 'dinner'. yeah, i had eaten all of mine before the person at the other end of the bar had been given theirs! not really a dinner.  in the cup is a house-made rosemary and balsamic tomato soup, to the right is a grilled cheese with beecher's flagship cheese, a tuna(?) crudo on cucumber, and a scotch egg.

now matt and i have seen scotch eggs being prepared on a number of cooking shows and have always thought 'yuck!' i was so hungry i bit into this without even thinking. and OMG it was SO good!

our 2 bartenders, alex and toby.

1oz Toby's Shrubb
1oz Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters

8th? 9th? drink? this doesn't seem to be up on the drinking lessons blog like i was told, and of course you can see i'm still missing one! do you blame me? 1 grapefruit and that *little* plate of food with all that alcohol!

after class we all went into the Hunt Club for a real meal.

beecher's mac and cheese with crab

'lox and bagels' only toast. (yes, when i leave the table and food arrives i have to accept the fact that people will eat and not wait for photos! :-)

lamb chops and beans

beechers flagship on macrina brioche, and house-made rosemary and balsamic tomato soup

don't remember

beef filet on carrots with potato fritte

crab cake? don't remember

double layer chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, vanilla ice cream

house made chocolate gelato

The Hunt Club was fantastic. Drinking Lessons was fun.

i have always wondered what the inside of the Sorrento was like, and i would've taken pics of the lobby if there hadn't been a big corp. party going on and spilling into the lobby.

the place is decadent. now i'm really curious what the top floor rooms are like!
